Channel 4 is poised to provoke further controversy with a documentary fronted by Keith Allen about the evangelical Christian channel God TV.

The programme is understood to be in a similar vein to Allen’s acclaimed documentary Tourettes de France, in which the comedian and actor took a group of Tourette’s syndrome sufferers from Scotland to Paris to visit the hospital where their condition was first diagnosed.

The new programme, which has the working title The God Programme, is understood to take an irreverent and critical look at the British-owned Christian broadcaster and its fundraising methods.

The new 60-minute documentary is being made by Associated Rediffusion, which is run by maverick writer and producer Victor Lewis-Smith. The company also made Tourettes de France.

According to sources at C4, the programme’s rough cuts feature footage of Allen attempting a citizen’s arrest at the studios of the channel, which currently occupies the 760 slot on the Sky platform and states on its website that its mission is “invading enemy territory one screen at a time”.

The channel was founded in 1995 by the couple Rory and Wendy Alec, and claims to be broadcast from “a global transmission centre” in Israel to a potential worldwide audience of 275 million people, according to the website.

Channel 4 declined to elaborate on its plans, but a spokesman confirmed that the programme has been filmed and would be shown this year.

A spokesman for God TV was contacted by but was unable to comment at the time of publication.
